Yes. A positive skills assessment from the authority that covers your nominated occupation must be in hand before you can be invited. Engineers Australia assesses engineers, ACS assesses ICT professionals, VETASSESS covers most general professional roles, and TRA covers trades. The assessment verifies that your qualification and experience match the ANZSCO occupation you are nominating.

The points-tested skilled visas (189, 190, 491) require you to be under 45 at the date of invitation, and applicants aged 45 or over score zero age points. Employer-sponsored routes are the practical alternative: the subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa has no age cap, and some employer-nomination exemptions exist for specific circumstances.

Plan in stages rather than as one number.
