Australia Skilled Migration Roadmap: 189, 190, 491 & Employer Routes

Australia's skilled pathway is a chain: occupation fit, assessing-authority outcome, English, points, SkillSelect, and—depending on the visa—state, family, or employer support. A weak first decision can invalidate every later step.

Select occupation by evidence, not aspiration

The nominated occupation should fit your qualification and demonstrated duties. Confirm that it is eligible for the visa you are considering and identify the correct assessing authority. Closely related titles can have different codes, authorities, evidence rules, and outcomes.

Read the assessing authority's current rules first

Engineers Australia, ACS, VETASSESS, ANMAC, TRA, APC and other bodies apply different qualification, employment, English, currency, and document rules. A positive assessment is not a visa, but many skilled routes cannot proceed without it.

Calculate points with defensible dates

Age, English, skilled employment, qualifications, partner factors, Australian study, regional study, professional year, and nomination can affect points. Claim only what will be valid at the relevant invitation and application stages, and keep evidence of employment periods and test results.

Use state nomination as a genuine settlement plan

States publish their own occupation, points, residence, employment, registration, and commitment criteria. Compare where you can realistically live and work, not only where an invitation appears easier.

Keep the EOI accurate and current

An EOI is not a visa application, but invitation decisions rely on its claims. Update changed employment, English, partner, qualification, and contact facts. Do not overclaim points and plan the expiry dates of assessments and tests.

Prepare the visa evidence before invitation

Build identity, civil, skills assessment, English, employment, qualification, police, health, partner, and points evidence in advance. Documents must support the claim as made at the legally relevant time.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Confirm occupation and visa-list fit

Check the current skilled occupation list and every visa subclass being considered.

  2. 2

    Choose the assessing authority pathway

Read the authority's current applicant guide and resolve qualification or work-evidence gaps.

  3. 3

    Improve English strategically

Use an accepted test and target the band that changes your points or registration outcome.

  4. 4

    Calculate verifiable points

Record the supporting document and expiry date beside every claimed point.

  5. 5

    Compare 189, 190, 491 and employer options

Assess independence, location obligations, occupation demand, employer prospects, cost, and timing.

  6. 6

    Submit and maintain SkillSelect EOI

Use accurate facts, select realistic jurisdictions, and update the profile when facts change.

  7. 7

Lodge a complete visa application if invited

Recheck points and eligibility at invitation, follow the official checklist, and disclose material facts.

Frequently asked questions

Is 65 points enough for an Australia skilled visa invitation?

It is the published threshold for the points-tested 189, 190 and 491 routes, but actual invitations depend on occupation, ranking, state criteria, quotas, and round settings.

Can I submit SkillSelect before a skills assessment?

Points-tested skilled routes generally require the relevant skills assessment details and other eligibility evidence. Follow the subclass and EOI instructions current on Home Affairs.

What is the difference between 190 and 491?

Subclass 190 is a state-nominated permanent visa. Subclass 491 is a provisional regional visa with regional conditions and a later permanent-residence pathway if requirements are met.

Does a positive skills assessment guarantee a visa?

No. It establishes an occupation-assessment outcome; visa eligibility, points, invitation, nomination, health, character, and other criteria remain separate.
