Canada CRS Score Explained (and How to Improve It)

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores your Express Entry profile out of 1,200 points. The highest-ranked candidates receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in periodic draws. Understanding what drives your CRS is the key to getting invited.

What makes up your CRS

ComponentWeight (approx.)
Core human capital (age, education, language, experience)Up to ~460–500
Spouse factorsUp to ~40
Skill transferability (education + language + experience combos)Up to ~100
Additional points (nomination, job offer, French, Canadian study/sibling)Up to 600

Why the additional 600 points matter

A provincial nomination (PNP) adds 600 points and effectively guarantees an invitation. French-language ability, a sibling in Canada, and Canadian education or work experience also add meaningful points. For many candidates, a PNP or a stronger language result is the difference between waiting and getting invited.

Practical ways to raise your CRS

Retake your language test to reach CLB 9+ (language is one of the highest-leverage factors), complete an Educational Credential Assessment for all qualifications, add French, gain another year of skilled experience, or target a provincial nomination in a province that wants your occupation. Small language gains often unlock large skill-transferability points.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Calculate your baseline

Use our CRS calculator to get your current score across age, education, language, and experience.

Usually language: moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 can add 50–100+ points through core and transferability points.

  3. 3

    Target additional points

Pursue a provincial nomination (+600), add French, or gain more experience — whichever fits your profile best.

  4. 4

    Keep your profile fresh

Update your Express Entry profile as your scores improve so you're ranked correctly for the next draw.

Frequently asked questions

What CRS score do I need?

Cut-offs change every draw and by draw type (general vs category-based). Category-based and provincial draws often have lower effective thresholds. Aim as high as you can and treat published cut-offs as moving targets — always check the latest draw results.

What's the fastest way to increase my CRS?

For most people it's the language test — reaching CLB 9 boosts both core points and skill-transferability points. A provincial nomination adds 600 points and is the single biggest lever if you qualify.

Does a job offer still add points?

Points for arranged employment have changed over time. Check the current IRCC rules, as the value of a job offer in CRS has been adjusted. We advise based on the latest policy.
